A tiny chip that Heals entire organs: A Major Breakthrough

With technological advancements, several new approaches are being developed for treating people. And now, even the science fiction stuff is becoming a reality. Yes, a research team from Ohio State’s College of Engineering and Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has come up with a technology that can restore nearly any organ soon.

The cell function is changed by the device through a non-invasive approach. It depends on a kind of nanotechnology known as tissue nanotransfection. This has the potential to reprogram the living adult cells into any different celltype.Thestudy was conjointly led by Dr. Chandan Sen and L. James Lee.The groundbreaking technology depends on 2 main components; the chip is the first. The researchers, using nanotechnology, fabricated the device so that it canintroducetheso-called genetic load into the cells of the body.

The 2ndcomponent is the genetic load itself. A particular genetic code in the form of RNA or DNA is carried by the chip, which, when administered to cells, modifies them from their former function and structure to the functions and structure required to heal the injury. As explained by the scientists, the reprogramming factors are introduced into the cell with the use of an extremely focused and intense electric field via assembled nano channels.” Simply putting in other words, the chip is mounted onto the skin and with a mere touch, tiny and nearly undetectable electrical current forms conduits into the tissue.

Heals entire organs

The RNA or DNA is delivered via these nano channels and initiates cell reprogramming, providing them a new identity. The device was tested in mice by the team by implementing the technology to the skin of their wounded legs, in which the blood flow was obstructed. The skin cells of the mice were successfully transformed into vascular cells. Dr. Sen said, “In a week, we started observing the transformation.”In the 2nd week, the skin cells had modified into functional blood vessels, and by the 3rd week, the legs of the rodents were fully cured, with no additional pharmacological intervention.

Dr. Sen further said, “What is even more stimulating is that it not only functions on the skin but in any tissue type.”In another set of trials, the scientists used the device to change skin cells into brain cells, assisting to repair the area that had been injured by stroke.Given the simple, non-pharmacological, and non-invasive characteristic of the technology, the researchers are expecting to take the device further for human clinical trials soon.
