652 URLs of Social Media Jammed By Government

Jamming of social media URLs on the suggestions of a government board have elevated to 652 till June 2017from 10 in 2014. On the other hand, those jammed during the same period on court orders decreased to 83from 432, the Lok Sabha was told this week.

Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, the Minister of State for Home Affairs, also told the House that the figure of cyber crimes posted during 2016, 2015, and 2014 stood at 12,317, 11,592 and 9,622, respectively.The minister showcased the charts for the number of Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) of social media jammed throughout past 3 Years.

The statistics displays that figure of URLs of social media jammed on suggestion of the government board below the Information Technology Act’s Section 69A were 652 till June 2017, 964 in 2016, 587 in 2015, and 10 in 2014.It displays that 83 URLs were jammed due to court orders in 2017, 100 in 2016,632 in 2015, and 432 in 2014. The response claims that statistics for 2017 (till June) and 2016 is for jamming below Information Technology Act’s Section 69A, on basis of court orders.

“On the basis of inputs received from elected nodal officers from departments of state/central government, a method for jamming of social media account/contentbelow Information Technology Act’s Section 69A is obtainable in the Ministry of Information Technology and Electronics,” Ahir claimed to the media in an interview.

The government board which suggests jamming of social media based on offensive content is led by a Home Ministry’s Senior Officer.”As per data reported to and tracked by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), a total no. of 49,455, 44,679, 27,482, and 50,362 cyber security cases were observed during the years 2015, 2014, 2017 (till June), and 2016,respectively,” he further added to his statement.

Keeping in mind the fact that cyber crimes and cyber attacks generally have pan-India and global character, state-wise guesses of losses occurred are not presented, Ahir claimed further.”As per the data available, 20 cases related to ISIS have been investigated by National Investigation Agency.It has been established that Internet/social media has been broadly utilized to radicalize people. Such cases are also filed in police stations all over the nation for which combineddata is not accessible,” he claimed to the media.

The minister claimed that the government has accepted National Cyber Security Policy with aim on skill development, capacity building, cyber research,international cooperation, and training & development.
