Bharti Airtel, the biggest mobile phone firm in India, is in advanced discussion with handset producers to roll out a 4G handset in the lead for almost Rs 2,500, during Diwali. The company has requested producers for packing huge amounts of voice minutes and data with the device to take the fight to Reliance Jio for restoring a share of the huge market.

The 4G smartphone, which will be co-marketed by top telecom company of India and the handset producer but not subsidized by Airtel, will be powered by the well-liked Android OS. Telecom companies will enable consumers to install all apps accessible on the Google Play Store, sources aware of this matter claimed to the media in an interview. “Airtel is discussing to some handset makers to bring in a handset for almost Rs 2,500, that will have a better camera, larger screen, and better battery performance as compared to what a feature handset could provide,” a Senior Industry Executive having knowledge of Airtel’s plans claimed to the media. “Talks are at a very higher level,” the source further added. Sources at handset producer Karbonn and Lava verified that they are in individual discussions with the telecom segment leader for a launch of huge-market 4G handset. Representatives at Lava and Karbonn refused to comment.

“We do not reply on market rumors,” a representative for Bharti Airtel claimed to the media. In the middle of the increasing battle for data users, both Airtel and Jio are moving their focus to the approximately 500 Million feature handset consumers who still utilize voice services and have not updated to smartphones owing to the lack of express need or affordability. Yet, both telecom companies are taking on different strategies, with Airtel grappling to defend its share against rivalry from Jio in this cost-sensitive but huge market.

Reliance Industries is providing a 4G VoLTE feature handset equipped in with a Jio SIM, and efficiently free of cost. A deposit of Rs 1,500 is given back to the consumer post 3 Years. A monthly enrollment fee of Rs 153 will guarantee unlimited data and voice, enabling access to the pre-loaded Jio apps and Internet, comprising cinema, live TV, Facebook, music, WhatsApp, and YouTube. Sources claim that Reliance Industries might well introduce more than 1 model of the 4G feature handset at striking cost points.
