A 6-in-1 Smartphone Biosensor Unit, MediaTek Sensio Revealed for Health Monitoring

MediaTek declared the roll out of the new MediaTek Sensio, which is a 6-in-1 smartphone biosensor unit. It is basically a health monitoring unit that can carry out undertakings such as tracking the rate of heartbeat, blood pressure trends, and heart rate variability. It can calculate the levels of blood oxygen and blood volume (PPG or Photoplethysmography), and also executes an ECG (Electrocardiography) test. The company asserts that Sensio can provide results for the abovementioned 6 data points about health in 60 Seconds.

Software particularly designed to provide healthcare data has been integrated within the MediaTek Sensio (MT6381). Comprising optical, processing, and electrical elements, the MediaTek Sensio can be entrenched into smartphones without the requirement of numerous sensors. Apparently, the smartphone OEMs can get third-party and native apps to make use of the module.

The health monitoring unit uses a blend of a light-sensitive sensor and light emitting diodes (LEDs) to calculate the differences in infrared and red light from the fingertips of a user. The MediaTek Sensio can determine PPG levels and ECG by generating a closed loop between the biosensor and the heart of a user. This is enabled when the user makes contact with the electrodes and electrical sensors on the device.

Measurements of the Sensio are 6.8 × 4.93 × 1.2 mm. Also, an OLGA 22-pin package is presented with the sensor. A MediaTek System-On-Chip is supposedly not needed for the Sensio to function. Any smartphone producer can utilize the module on their device regardless of the processor utilized.

Sr. Director of Product Marketing for the wireless business of MediaTek, Dr. Yenchi Lee, said, “Offering individuals the facility to get their health data with a smartphone is a leap forward in developing the world as a healthier place.”

The new MediaTek Sensio will be accessible for smartphone producers initiating early 2018. MediaTek, earlier this year, had pronounced the introduction of its foremost narrow band IoT SoC targeted at inexpensive IoT devices.
