NCR-Based Manufacturing Halted By Big Companies Post NGT Guidance On Pollution Level

Major consumer goods like Coca-Cola, Dabur, Honda and Perfetti Van Melle have stopped functioning in their factories in Delhi-NCR. At the same time, Hero MotoCorp said that manufacturing has been partially impacted. The National Green Tribunal had banned industrial activities in Delhi and adjoining areas on Thursday. This step was raised to overcome smog in the area. A Coca-Cola official stated that the company has stopped manufacturing at least four plants in Delhi and adjoining areas to follow the guidelines of NGT. Some of these plants belong to the company and some to bottling plants.

An official of Dabar, who made Ayurvedic medicines in Sahibabad plant, told that the company has stopped production even after adhering to the emission norms. He said, “Emission norms of NGT and Pollution Control Boards are followed in all its manufacturing units including Sahibabad Plant. Despite following the rules, we are accepting these guidelines of the NGT and the production in the Sahibabad unit has voluntarily stopped till the next order of the authorities.”

The spokesperson of the country’s largest confectionery maker Perfetti said, “Manufacturing has been stopped in the Manesar plant. Emission norms are already being followed in our factory, yet we have taken steps according to NGT guidelines.”

Production in Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India’s Manesar plant is halted from Saturday. Industry sources said that the work will start from Tuesday and production loss in two days will be offset by the coming days. An official of Hero MotoCorp said that the work has partially affected. They said, “We have been told that this order is for those companies who were not following the rules. All the rules in all our factories are already being followed. The impact of the supply of materials due to transport has affected our functioning partially.

Work has stopped in many factories since last Friday or Saturday. The NGT is expected to hear on Tuesday on this matter. Officials of Honda Motors and Maruti Suzuki said that work is being done in Gurugram and Greater Noida factories as the level of pollution are within the sanctioned limits. The bench, headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar, had said on Thursday, “All industrial activities which are causing emissions in Delhi-NCR will not be allowed after November 14.”

The emission concern is at the highest peak and is certainly affecting operations of the manufacturers. However, if the emission level isn’t controlled or reduced, there are high chances of ban on industrial manufacturing first, which seems to be a bad sign for the Delhi-NCR industrial segment.
