Flipkart Beats Amazon One More Time

Flipkart confirmed the crown one more time at the yearly festive season stakes of ecommerce, growing its dominance over Amazon India in a segment where total sales are expected to have increased by almost 40% over events of the last year.

Share of festive season sales for Flipkart jumped to 50% from 45% as compared to the last year, grabbing much of the industry lost by Snapdeal, according to industry predictions. Market share of Amazon at the time of the festive sale that has stretched almost a month is predicted to have stayed unaffected at 35%. Although the firm claimed it witnessed a 50% share in other metrics such as active customers and order volume.

Amazon India and Flipkart attributed for almost 80% of overall festive season sales of this year, as per experts. The last stage of the mega sales events concludes this month. “We anticipate online retailers to have traded products worth $2.8 Billion to 2.9 Billion this festive season (starting in September with Amazon’s and Flipkart’s flagship sales), as compared to $2 Billion to 2.1 Billion in 2016,” claimed Satish Meena, senior forecast analyst, to the media in an interview.

“The large cash backs and discounts on handsets this festive season attributed to the development in GMV.” Flipkart took the front position over its U.S. competitor at the time of its first flagship sale last month itself. The biggest online marketplace of India posted gross sales, or gross merchandise volume, of Rs 4,300 Crore at the time of its 5-Day Big Billion Days sale, up from Rs 2,300 Crore as compared to the last year (excluding fashion marketplaces Jabong and Myntra), as per industry analysts. Amazon during its Great Indian Festival Sale last month posted Rs 2,500 Crore in GMV, up from Rs 1,800 Crore as compared to previous year.

Amazon India mentioned a separate report to claim that the highest amount of users carried on to keep their trust on Amazon in the 1st two versions of Amazon Great Indian Festival Sale, with Amazon.in witnessing almost 50% of both order share as well as customer for the sales so far. Flipkart did not respond to email questions. While one more online retailer, as well, expected general industry sales at the time of festive season of this year at almost $3 Billion, some analysts predicted more unpretentious figures.

For now, the home grown online shopping giant, Flipkart, hold the peak position in the race.
